Anyone feel the need to be MOD?
Sun Apr 18, 2010 6:14 pm by meanwood_monks
Been thinking about this for a while now.

Some of you guys/gals have been here since day 1. Cheers for all your support over this time.
Was wondering if anyone was wanting to keep an eye on things and have MOD rights here.

PostSubject: Strensall Tannery - Strensall, nr. York - Sept 2008 - 12 pics   Fri Sep 26, 2008 11:06 am

I posted a report on this place 6 months ago but it got lost in the grand change over, so here's a new one...

This was my second visit to the tannery, I was last there in March and this time it was a lot more trashed, but that meant more rooms were accessible this time!

Can't find out too much about the place but it would seem that Strensall has had some kind of tannery for centuries, this one was set up around 1805 and it is assumed that a deciding factor in its location was its close proximity to the Foss Navigation allowing easy transportation of goods into York and beyond.

The tannery is still owned by Charles F Stead & Co Ltd, a Leeds based leather firm of some repute. In the 1960's up to 50 people were employed at the tannery, by the time of closure in January 2004 there were just 9.

The site is currently awaiting development, with rumours of a business park providing 400 jobs, of course the local villagers are unhappy about this as it would mean a further burden on the already pressurized transport network. Unfortunately the buildings have been a constant attraction to little firestarters, the poor place suffering 5 fires in the last 3 years - locals are pissed off about this too and there are calls to tear it down. We shall see. Oh it's a right minger of a place to visit.

Part of a tasty looking lathey/drill type machine

A girly calendar from 1965, sadly ruined or else I would have 'saved' it Laughing

Part of another machine

And yet another cool looking beast - it seems i was on a machinery kick this afternoon!

One can only imagine what was burnt in here

There were 3 of these huge drums, this one had the only amusing graf in the place

In the storage shed... huge bales of leather in hessian sacks, that some kid had tried to burn, it smelt bad in here folks.

And finally some pools for some part of the processing that turns animal skin into bags 'n' shoes

Cheers TC.

Nice one mate. This looks an interesting place, and has some cool machinery bits in there. I do like the drill and the "barrel of laughs" COuld you get upstairs, or were the floors super dodgy? Looks like a better way to spending the afternoon, than having irate council house tennants moaning about about when the plasterer is coming.

P.S I quite like the edges cut off. It makes things easier as a viewer not having to look at the whole picture, and concentrates the eye. Of course someone with my immense UrbEx skills carefully frames each image in the viewfinder to account for this.
